Other Considerations
Advertising is a complete job in itself. If you have someone available who works with local media such as newspapers, then you are off to a flying start. Get a professional and attention grabbing flyer / poster designed giving details of your frequency, broadcast dates and times when topical issues may be discussed.
Approximately 1 week before your planned broadcast date you should be thinking about doing a leaflet drop around your target audience area. Although your broadcast may reach an audience over 10 miles away, you may wish to concentrate on the immediate locality around your Church fellowship. Leaflets can be distributed by the Post Office or by local newspaper deliveries. This method of distribution can be costly and your leaflets may get mixed up with other junk mail.
Take out an advertisement in the local newspaper, or perhaps get the paper to run an article about what you are up to.
Fly Posting. Not strictly legal and you may attract the wrong sort of attention!
Approach local business and ask them if they will display a poster for you. You may even wish to ask them to donate a prize for a competition in return for a mention during the broadcast. Remember, no product name advertising.
Finance By the time you have purchased all the relevant licences to keep yourself legal during your broadcast you will not have much change left from £950.00 for a 3 day event. Add to this the cost of advertising, catering, etc and the costs may add up to between £1500 - £2000.00. Obviously the more of this you can do yourselves the more costs can be kept down.
Programming Being topical is key to capturing your audiences attention. If your broadcast is to be completely “Christian based” then you may wish to interview local Christian business men, sporting personalities, or people who have had a particularly traumatic experience and are willing to share how God helped them through it. Some personalities may require permission from their management before doing a radio interview, so be sure to approach them well before the event.
If your broadcast is to be more “community based” then you may wish to approach your local councillor or MP, or perhaps the manager of a football team. There is a risk of appearing to be controversial or biased if you take this approach, so be careful and try to be as much “cross-community” as possible.
Music Lots of music breaks up the interview. Peoples attention will wander after a few minutes of spoken dialogue so select your music to suit the interview. Remember, you are primarily a Christian Radio Station. Some lyrics in secular songs are not really suitable for this type of broadcast.
Technical That’s were we come in. We are more than willing to train up a few people in how to use the equipment, however, there is absolutely nothing different in running a radio station to running the PA system in Church. The equipment consists of a mixing desk connected to microphones, CD player / computer, and then output to the transmitter. It’s as easy as that.
Prayer Perhaps this should be top of the list instead of the bottom. Saturate your project with prayer. It won’t work if you don’t.
